Google’s Auto suggest (also called AutoComplete) function can be incredibly damaging to a person or brand. In may cases, Google suggests words such as “scam” and “reviews” and “complaints” in association with a brand or persons name, such as the following example:

According to Google, as much a 64% of search users will choose an auto suggest from the pop-up list, rather than completing their original search phrase.

These auto suggestions are based on real searches and one of the factors that determine the suggestions is the search popularity. But research has shown that the Google AutoComplete is also drawn to negativity.

How to check your Google Auto Suggest:

• Simply visit the Google search engine for your country (USA = Google.com, Australia = Google.com.au etc) and begin typing your business or personal name, look at the pop-up suggestions, and make sure you try each one to see how bad the results are.
